Tadalafil
Tadalafil is a medication indicated to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is when you have trouble getting or maintaining an erection. Tadalafil can also treat other issues related to men’s health, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and ejaculation issues (1).
Tadalafil belongs to a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It supports an erection by elevating the blood flow going to the penis in response to sexual stimulation. This elevation in blood flow causes an erection (2).
ED: Starting dose: 10 mg as needed prior to sexual activity. Increase to 20 mg or
decrease to 5 mg based upon efficacy/tolerability. Improves erectile function
compared to placebo up to 36 hours post dose. Not to be taken more than once
per day (3)

Commonly experienced side effects with tadalafil include:
- Headache
- Indigestion
- Muscle pain
- Nasal congestion
- Back pain
- Limb pain
- Flushing
Additionally, certain precautions should be taken when thinking about starting tadalafil. These risks include:
- Cardiac risk with sexual activity in individuals with preexisting cardiovascular disease
- A prolonged erection lasting more than four hours or priapism, defined as painful erections lasting longer than six hours
- Vision and hearing loss
- Low blood pressure when takin sildenafil with alpha-blockers or anti-hypertensives (3)
Certain individuals should not take tadalafil. These contraindications include:
- Those taking nitric oxide donors. Tadalafil can enhance the effects of these medications, such as organic nitrates or nitrites.
- Those allergic to tadalafil or its components (3).
